Traps: The Electrical Rods Trap

Shock Bolt (Electrical Rods) Trap

General Information

Training in magic item use helps in disarming this type of trap.

This trap is shocking. Sometimes called rods, shocking rods or shockers.

Physically Viewing

>disarm my strongbox
You carefully begin to examine a sturdy silver strongbox for traps...

Looking closely into the keyhole, you notice a pair of small metal rods a hair's width from touching each other. Peering around the inside of the keyhole, you can see that the lock would push the two rods together should the lock be tampered with.

It looks like a simple trap (about -90).

You still have a good enough picture of the trap in your mind, that you could try to disarm it.
Roundtime: 23 sec.

Physically Disarming, Success

>disarm my strongbox
Having discovered a trap on the strongbox you begin to carefully attempt to disarm it...

You feel like you've made a poor attempt.

With great care you take a pair of metal grips and bend the sensitive metal rods out of alignment. It looks as though they cannot be pressed together by the lock mechanism any more.
Roundtime: 33 sec.

These are magically disarmable. These traps, tough to magically disarm, tough to manually disarm sometimes too, take a life sometimes. Reportedly, those that where metal armor die more often than those that wear non-leather armor. And if the disarmer gets lucky, the bolt of lightning jumps to a warrior standing nearby, spearing the life of the disarmer, and thereby losing its effectiveness, causing pain only. One secret, some rogues try, involves asking a metal laden warrior to lean on them for good luck and support while disarming such a trap. Good luck to you!

Where Found

Find these types of boxes in remote and not so remote areas. The silver-back orcs reportedly like these types of boxes. Frost Giants and Lesser Ice Giants also like these Lightning Bolt Traps. Many other characters in the land of Elanthia prefer these traps as well, as these Rod Traps involve little work and little cost to put into place. Strong characters, those that like to refine metal and polish metals, with the strength to polish up some metal rods prefer these traps.

These traps tend to kill more than once. Once the trap goes off, the trap in effect remains armed and ready to go off again. Be careful and make sure a metal laden warrior leans upon you when you disarm these traps!
